Radical Literature in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Given the ever-increasing abilities of so-called artificial intelligence, it may seem as though the legitimacy of literature is under terminal threat. If writing short stories and poems, and indeed entire novellas and novels, is already possible for distributed networks, what is the status of literature? Likewise, if generative adversarial networks can produce works of art, what remains of literary art? With the rise of deepfakes, what remains of authorship?
On the other hand, such challenges to literature may present it with an unheard-of opportunity. How far can ‘artificial intelligence’ threaten the expression of non-white, non-cisgendered realities? How capable is it of radical and feral, shapeshifting and unconventional writing? What is its status in the face of literary autonomy, from Mallarme to Literaturnost and beyond?
This symposium aims to gather a wide range of perspectives on the status and possibilities of radical literature in the age of artificial intelligence. Potential questions include, but are by no means limited to:
– the concept of literariness in the age of A.I.,
– the politics of gender and race in defining what is ‘human’ literature, and what is not,
– the economics of authorship and deepfakes,
– the role of formal experimentation in defining literature,
– the question of readership and ‘how to tell’ machinic writing,
– the dimensions of ‘experience’ as literature confronts machines,
